Welcome to New Edinburgh, a suburb of Ottawa along both the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers.

New Edinburgh is a highly community-focused neighbourhood filled with lots to see and do!

  • New Edinburgh is an older and fairly affluent neighbourhood where you can find the home of the Governor General of Canada! It was founded by Thomas McKay, a builder of the Rideau’s lock system. Many of the streets in the area are named after his family. He bought the land there while doing his work on the canal, and founded a saw mill, flour mill, bakery, and more to create a new settlement.

  • New Edinburgh is a fairly affluent neighbourhood and has a population of around 4,000 people.

    • Fern Hill School

    • First New Edinburgh School

    • Macdonald-Caritier Academy

    • Ecole St Charles

There are plenty of other schools in the area, just outside of New Edinburgh’s neighbourhood.

  • New Edinburgh has a very tight-knit community and has 3 associations and its own website.

Check out the New Edinburgh Community and Arts Centre, the New Edinburgh Park, and plenty of retirement communities in the area!

  • New Edinburgh has plenty of parks including Stanley Dog Park, and a number of pet stores like Pet Valu and “Chew That”. There are also a number of pet walkers in the area, and if your pet needs to make it’s yearly appointment at the vet, the Beechwood Animal Hospital is just down the road.

  • New Edinburgh has plenty of parks, schools, and playgrounds. However, is is quite close to downtown Ottawa, meaning it can be fairly unsafe at night. Children should be monitored by an adult when playing outside and be well educated on speaking with strangers, as with any neighbourhood!

  • New Edinburgh is a very small neighbourhood, but is close to the Rideau Centre for shopping and plenty of small shops in the Lowertown, Rockcliffe, and Vanier areas!

  • Check out New Edinburgh Park, the Ottawa River, the Rideau Canal, the statue of Queen Elizabeth the second, the Rideau Cottage, and MacKay United church! All of these places are filled with the rich history of the founders of New Edinburgh and the builders of the Rideau Canal.

  • There are plenty of grocery stores of all types in the area, although not any directly in the neighbourhood. Cross over into Vanier for your nearest grocery store, a metro, or see any other chain stores and locally owned options just a few streets over!

  • If you want to go for a night out in New Edinburgh, you’ll want to head down to the Byward Market.

  • There are plenty of fun restaurants all along St. Patrick Street which divides New Edinburgh from Vanier.

  • New Edinburgh is a more affluent area and has plenty of single-family homes and retirement communities.

  • For such a small area, there are a ton of parks in New Edinburgh!
